By 1650, firearms make up over 50% of infantry and light field guns become integrated into infantry units. In 1600 you have Pike blocks being thinned out against the threat of artillery, and linear battalions competing against, and later replacing Tercios. By the end of the Italian wars, firearms would be indispensable. The Protestant Reformation happens ~1520, which would soon spark the European wars of religion. Then in the 1500's you have the Italian wars, and the deployment of firearms/crossbows alongside pikes in the Spainish Tercios, which would soon be copied. Then in ~1475 you would see the ascendency of Pike blocks, first Swiss and then later German. Only the Ottomans would have large contingents of firearms regulars with their Janissaries. Ranged weapons are mainly bows and crossbows.
The perfect timeframe is 1450-1650, because it captures the transformation between late medieval and early modern, in both warfare and politics.Īt the very start you have late medeval armies of heavy cavalry and men at arms supplemented by levies.
